Religious Groups Studies

Starting from April, the Youth Sunday School will dive into a new 8-week series about major religious groups of the world. In this particular term, the students will be taking the lead to present their findings and facts about 1 religion or cult per week. Their presentations on Sunday serve the purpose of sharing with the rest of the class. The teachers will also provide research discoveries and summaries in advance for each leading group and its associated topic.

Without a doubt, this will incur additional workload for the students, meaning they will need to adjust their personal schedule to accommodate for reading and research. However, I strongly believe that the students will learn the most if they dedicate their own time upon the assigned topic.

Assigned topics:

(Date / Lead / Topic)

  1. April 12th / Bo and Ben / Atheism
  2. April 19th / Sylvana / Mormons (Latter-day Saints)
  3. April 26th / BrendanAgnosticism
  4. May 3rd / Tammy / Scientology
  5. May 10th / Calvin, Dave, Gary / Buddhism
  6. May 17th / Daniel, Felix and Ching Lam / Islam-Muslim
  7. May 24th / Zubei, Grace and Samantha / Judaism

A 20-minutes presentation should provide answers to the “5Ws & 1H” of certain religious group, which are the “What”, “Where”, “When”, “Why”, “Who” and “How”. We are not looking for a detail, research paper-type presentation, but it needs to demonstrate basic understanding on the selected topic. We strongly encourage our students to put their creative spin in their presentation, and acquire additional help outside of this Sunday School if they so choose.

This type of education method provides teaching and research experiences for the students, giving them the opportunities to learn from one another. Also, this will steer away from having lecture-style teaching week after week.

We do have to make necessary assumptions for this teaching method – where those who have received an assigned topic will provide a presentation at the end. With that being said, anticipation for certain students to neglect that duty is also crucial. However as teachers, we should continue to communicate with the students (especially with those who have assigned topics) and proactively provide support; in other words, don’t wait for them to come to us last minute!
