Losing the Real Purpose of Serving God

Why do we volunteer for VBS?  Why do we help the worship team, teach Sunday school or clean the church?

We might be confused about why you see people work so hard for the church. We do this because we love God, and we are to serve him with our hearts but not with our mouths. The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught. Isaiah 29:13. In this verse, God is telling us that we should serve him truly with our heart and not just serve him because people told us to or because we want to get the things that we want. God did so many wonderful things for us, you wouldn’t be sitting here right now without him.

During VBS, we all volunteered. If I asked you, why do you serve? What is the first thing that comes to mind?  Is the answer, for God? Or is it just for having fun? Is it the honour or the credits?  Many of us have been blinded or undirected by the overall goal/ purpose of volunteering at VBS. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24.  It is important for us to clear up our distractions like FAME, HONOR, POWER and being PRIDEFUL.

Remember love does not boast. Many of us have gotten lots of appreciation from Mrs. Ng, the directors, the bucket sticky note thing, the certificate and all that. Of course, it reflects your hard work.  However, that is sadly not the point. The point is, you’ve done this work because we enjoy it, leading children to Him, and serving GOD. Even if you did not get appreciated for all the hard work you have done.  It doesn’t matter, because God sees everything. God knows what you are doing 24/7, and that’s what all matters. We can be humble. It doesn’t matter how much you do, it only matters if you do it truly in your heart in serving God.  Also, We serve not to satisfy parents, friends or other people who ask us, BUT to serve God.

What does serving God necessarily mean? Firstly, it means to recognize His Lordship over our lives ( We are designed by God and made for his purpose) so that we can serve him.  Secondly, to align our thoughts with God in other words to be like Jesus.  Romans 12:22 says, “Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Lastly, to do His will includes doing what He commands us to do so we can spread the gospel and show our love of God.  Including VBS, when we teach the children.  The purpose of volunteering is to lead them so they will know God and believe in Him.

We sometimes get tested by God, to see our real purpose of serving Him. Be aware that the devil will tempt us during our tests.  When we are at our weakest, Satan will twist the truth, goad us, mock us, and accuse us.  Every one of your Faith will be tested, I have been distracted and the devil has created many barriers for me to serve God. But we can be like Jesus.  We can overcome our temptation by asking God for help, and by doing daily devotions we can serve God fully in our hearts. If now I ask you why you serve God? What would you answer?

Overall, serving God is with your heart and not just your mouth because God is our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. He is our master, and we are his servants.
