Discovering God’s Fingerprint

For our church retreat a few weeks ago, I brought some play dough for the kids to play with while the teens and adults had their devotional time. Play dough is such a cool thing to play with as it takes on the shape of any object pressed into it.

If you used your finger, you leave your fingerprint. If you use a key, the shape of the key is left in the dough. You can easily stick your finger through it but even then, a mark is left. I brought about 4 different colours and very quickly they ended up being mixed together forming many others

I was reminded of this as I read Psalm 33 this morning. Verses 13-15 says, “The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men…He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works.”

This passage actually is pretty mind blowing! Can you imagine the world, filled with millions and billions of people and the Lord fashions each and every heart individually.

It is hard to believe He takes such care with each of us. Think about all the attention He pays to our needs and think about all the details as He fashions us together.

Ephesians 2:10 says we were created for God works ordained for us to do.
He considers our works? God is interested in and watches what we do with what He’s given us: our intelligence, personality, talents, and ability.

As God “fashions hearts individually”, He also leaves His fingerprint. None of us are formed without His knowledge or His input. I don’t know about you, but I constantly mess up and often seek that which is temporal instead of the eternal.

Psalm 37:4 tells us: “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Sometimes I ask myself, “What is within my heart?” and “What do I desire?” Living in a world of affluence, I wonder sometimes if my heart is focused on God as it should? Sometimes my heart and mind are pulled by the need for a bigger or nicer home, a new car or truck, nicer clothes, or notoriety.

I know that the desires in my heart should be in tune with the fingerprints which the Lord placed on my heart. Only He knows what I truly want. I only think I know what I want.

When the Lord who fashioned my heart looks down from Heaven what does He expect to see as He considers my works? It’s not how much I accumulate – it’s not how successful the world thinks I am. It’s not how much I have given to the church, nor how many committees I worked on. God expects a lot from us and the above isn’t high on the list.

The reality is God expects more from us! It’s how much the world sees Jesus in me. It’s how my actions reflect the love and mercy I have so freely received. It’s how many of my words bring Him glory and honour. It’s how intimately I know Him, and how often I yield myself to His Spirit.

We are being changed and transformed each day. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world,[c] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

But that transformation requires our participation. We do that through prayer, spending time in the Word and fellowship. As we grow in our relationship with God, not only will God’s fingerprint be visible in our lives, we too can help others to discover His mark in theirs.
