Christianity and Science: DNA

Prologue:

We are doing a two part mini-series for the youth SSC about Christianity and Science. This is a controversial topic that constantly being examine by scholars around the world. Bringing this to the table at the Youth SSC makes me nervous. On one hand, we want to provide relevant and proper information, and on the other hand we want to present them in a way that is easily understandable; certain scientific terminologies, however, are unavoidable.

In this class, we are going to look at DNA along with some basic biology. Through reviewing on the articles and videos below, we want to lead our students on series of open discussions; providing opportunities to express how they feel about such complex system within human body. Does this come about with Randomness or is it done through intelligent design (by God)?

We are going to use a small portion from The Truth Project, Lesson 5 – Science: What is True? The Truth Project is a DVD-based small group curriculum comprised of 13 one-hour lessons taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This home study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life.

Epilogue:

I hope this biological topic presented in class generates certain interest for the students. Although the terminologies and theories are difficult to understand at this point in their lives, but it may serve as an eye-opener about God through the use of Science; perhaps also sparks as the motivation to pursuit the study of biology as well. My hope is that the main point is delivered clearly: the human body (as illustrated by cells and DNA) is an incredible example that we are created by God, seeded by His intelligent design through such complex system.
