NUMBERS 27:12-22; DEUTERONOMY 34:5-9; JOSHUA 1:1-9
The people of Israel had waited for many years to enter the land God had promised them. God told Moses, their leader: “Go up the mountain to see the land I have given the Israelites. After you have seen it, your life will come to an end.”
Moses did not want the people to be left without a wise leader. He told God, “Please choose a man who will lead the people so that the community won’t be like sheep without a shepherd.”
God replied, “Joshua has My Spirit in him. Bring him to the priest and the whole community. Give him your authority so that the Israelites will obey him. All the Israelites will go out and come back at his command.”
Moses obeyed and announced that Joshua would take his place. Soon after, Moses died. God buried him in the valley in the land of Moab.
God spoke to Joshua, “Moses, My servant, is dead. Now it is time for you and the people to prepare to cross the Jordan River and enter the land I have planned to give you. No one will be able to stand against you. I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you.”
God told Joshua, “Be strong. Have courage. Obey all My instructions. Do not turn from My commands so that you will be successful wherever you go. Talk about My words day and night. Do not be afraid or discouraged because the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
