Presentation by Tammy
What is Scientology?
A religious system based on the seeking of self-knowledge and spiritual fulfillment through graded courses of study and training. It was founded by American science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard (1911–86) in 1955.
- Scientology teaches that people are immortal beings who have forgotten their true nature. Its method of spiritual rehabilitation is a type of counseling known as auditing, in which practitioners aim to consciously re-experience painful or traumatic events in their past in order to free themselves of their limiting effects.
- Study materials and auditing sessions are made available to members on a fee-for-service basis.
- some of the related teachings are not revealed to practitioners until they have paid thousands of dollars to the church.
- They also believe that souls (thetans) reincarnate and have lived on other planets before living on Earth
Christianity vs. Scientology
Video from the church of Scientology: http://www.scientology.ca/what-is-scientology.html
- Scientology addresses the spirit—not the body or mind—and believes that Man is far more than a product of his environment, or his genes.
- Scientology comprises a body of knowledge which extends from certain fundamental truths. Prime among these are:
- Man is an immortal spiritual being.
- His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime.
- His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized.
Additional notes from the Teachers:
Tammy did a fantastic job in presenting all her findings; the presentation was clear and to the point. It was also very educational to go through a couple free courses on the Scientology website as well. These courses allow the students to understand how the “fee-for-service” actually works. They also serve the purpose to some healthy discussion after we review the videos together in class.
